You may be aware that music heals autism. Music heals mental illness more generally. Our son Daniel healed himself at least twice from extended (months-long) periods of schizophrenia. He was diagnosed in 1997 as hopelessly schizophrenic. During his last episode, I discovered the essential features of his psychosis entailed the non-dominance of his cerebral hemispheres. Normally, the left hemisphere is dominant. Most people do not know that dominance is maintained by sound transmitted through the tiny muscles in the middle ear. Listening to high-frequency music daily retrained his right middle ear stapedius muscle to the level of fitness where it could convey the energy of sound to his left cerebral hemisphere to maintain its dominance.
I hope you will be interested in the book I have written explaining how the brain works in relation to the neurology of the ear. My work is based on that of Dr. Alfred Tomatis, who learned the ear controls the voice (The Tomatis Effect, 1957). I discovered it controls cerebral dominance as well. I critique the leading UK psychiatrists' theories of "cerebral torque" and explain schizophrenic speech, hallucinations, etc. in terms of very low cerebral integration, approaching that of the person
This neurological understanding of the role of the attentive ear also explains why, for many unmedicated schizophrenics, talking therapy heals. Minuscule medication was essential to our son being able to regain left dominance. In fact, he fully recovered usually only when all medication was withdrawn. Daniel has been symptom-free for 3 years since he learned how to take care of his ears and protect them from the several factors that impact the middle ear. (Including viruses, which is relevant to some of the research you mention under psychobabble.) He continues to tune in to high-frequency music as he feels the need to maintain the fitness of his middle ear.
Understanding the role of the ear in supporting the degree of integration of the cerebral hemispheres is essential to understanding the range of human behaviour from normal through the most extreme aberration, as well as the states of consciousness from high alertness to profound sleep.

I've just got back from Kazakhstan where I taught EFT - had a very interesting group, including a medical doctor, a stockbroker, a witch and several healers :-)
The woman who called herself a witch told us of some examples of her work with people who were hearing voices - she used EFT to help them sleep, which made a big difference, and another intervention - to help change the belief of individual in relation to the origin of th voices - i.e. instead of seeing the voices as something external and threatening, understanding that the voices come from themselves. When the client was adamant that the voices didn't belong to him, she gave him two sweets to put in his pocket - and asked him to ask the voices how many sweets there were. The voices then correctly answered "two". Then she gave the client a small bag containing a number of sweets (he couldn't see how many) and asked him to ask the voices same question. The voices didn't know - so this convinced the client that they belonged to him and not to some frightening external force. EFT for improving sleep and this simple experiment seem to have made a huge difference to the few people she worked with - most of them were much less anxious, began to function better and regained independence, and the frequency/intensity of voices have subsided.
I thought this was quite a creative intervention!
