Disabled? Or enfeebled? Why jump on the Disability Rights bandwagon? People can and do recover from mental health problemsWe're a group of people on Facebook who discuss, well, lots of things really. Most of us have a mental health diagnosis, some have other impairments as well, and some people don't have a mental health diagnosis, but we are all Disabled.I guess we started the group as we felt that we wanted to discuss and debate the place of mental health within the disability movement - Lynn HarrisonWe are so tired of people with mental health problems and emotional distress - a transient experience (unless they become "lingerers rather than recoverers" - Ted Dumas- and stuck in cycles of dependency) jumping on the disabled bandwagon. In what way are you disabled? Cant work? Or won't work? Frightened you might be missing out on some of the financial benefits awarded to the genuinely deserving disabled? There is something rather sad in this alliance, and one which our disabled friends abhor as much as EleMentalists do. If you would like help reclaiming your life come to us or we can get you help. Our colleagues are genuinely striving to recover and thrive and the elements of recovery and thriving are well documented. Admittedly some of the issues within both movements are similar - stigma, misconceptions etc. but it is disingenuous to equate mental distress and disability.Robert Whitaker (2010) points out rightly how recovery used to be far more than what we see it as today, it required working, leaving dependence and shunning concepts of disability. What is asserted in cleaving to a disability model of mental distress is anti-recovery and sheer maintenance, not emancipation and thriving
Collide - Comfortably Numb
Community treatment orders when they were introduced in the UK in 2008 were professionally contentious, but the government asserted and was persuaded by their advisors that they “Will only apply to a tiny group of people -perhaps up to 600 a year”. In 2010, 6,200 patients were subject to Community treatment. http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2011/mar/15/mental-health-patients-forced-detention

DRUGGING IN PREGNANCYenforced drugging with toxic chemicalsA young woman who experiences psychosis temporarily was given dangerous off licence medication in pregnancy against her and her families will: She was implicitly told there’s a threat from Social Services that your baby could be taken away at birth if you don’t comply. Therefore we have arranged for you to go to a mother and baby unit in another area after the birth where the medication will be continued. You will not be able to breast feed your baby as you had planned as the medication can enter breast milk and therefore your baby could suffer side effects from it.
Why do Sane People end up in insane places?
Nothing about us without usWe demand the right to be different,;To be seen as distressed not damaged or illThe right to feel safe when distressed. The right to find healing in your own way. To live your own life in your own way the right to just be.We have a right to heal the hurts, we have the ability to heal and we have the resources to heal. If you don't believe healing is possible why come into this work? Sylvia May Forest
Motherhood has fallen prey to the psycho-pharmaceutical complex. If new legislation known as the Mother's Act becomes law, the drugging of infants through pregnant and nursing mothers will no doubt increase.
For we have been to the place where human beings shouldn’t go. But you know what they say, If it doesn’t kill you, it will only make you stronger, and it has killed too many friends of mine, inadvertently and unnecessarily in my opinion, and what a place, it’s bleak, cold, dark and dank, worse than the very worst of winters days. But consider this if you will, for if winter is here then can spring be far behind? Rowland Urey
Everyone wants to attack the church over the scandal of abuse and I was scandalised, but the church is an easy and obvious target, because society knew what they were up to. Society even forced some of us naughty boys there; councillors and communities knew what was happening years before the whistle was blown. Yes ,a priest molested me but my community held me down while it happened and patted his back. Who am I angry at and why? In the wards its no different, those called mad are my brethren and I will shout this scandal from the rooftop of the asylum. Mental Micky
